Lord Of The Flies movie reflection, march 6, 2013

After reading the book, our literature group watched the lord of the flies movie. It seemed mediocre compared to the book as many movies do. There were some very boring parts of the book like whole sequences of just walking and no dialogue. Although I can't blame them for the quality of special effects as it was 1969. The movie did stay to the book very well and did not add any non-book scenes. Overall I liked the movie and would gladly watch it again if the opportunity presented itself.

If I could be one thing for a day...

Don't you wish you could fly? I do, thats why if I could be anything, I would be a falcon. Falcons are able to fly at extremely high altitudes, and very fast too. Another perk of being a bird is being able to go  wherever you wanted to, without paying anything. it would also be nice to be able to escape every day life and not have to live in a house or pay for food. These are just a few of many reasons I would be a falcon.

Most birds are good at flying, but falcons are able to fly in higher altitudes because of their aerodynamic bodies. It would be very cool, being able to fly around building and skyscrapers. This would allow you to fly swiftly around city wind tunnels and alleyways. And besides, whats more majestic than a falcon? Of course, great speed would allow you to go many places very quickly without boundaries.

If humans could fly, we could make it anywhere in the world in a matter of days. Thats why it would be awesome to be a bird, free travel to anywhere in the world. Of course you would have to take a break, but you could just sit down in a tree for night. Not find a hotel, pay for it, unpack and then sleep. And then for breakfast, just swoop down and grabs some bugs and leave. Easy travel anywhere in the world, and not a dollar spent.

Falcons, unlike humans, are not bound to a house or location. If you felt like going to a tropical beach, go to tropical beach. If you felt like going to a snowy forest, go to a snowy forest. Also being a bird, it wouldn't be hard to find enough food to to keep you going. another contrast with animals and humans, no items to be attached too, no luggage or toys to keep track of. These are just a few of the many reasons it would be great to be a falcon.

Along with the small amount of food to keep you sustained, no physical possessions, and no money to worry about, it would be pretty great to be a falcon. No boundaries to keep you where you are, and no reason to leave or stay in a certain place. You could see something new every day and never worry about anything else that you have to do. I think that in the event I had to pick something to be for one day, I would definitely pick a falcon.

Question: The sow's head and the conch shell each wield a certain kind of power over the boys. In what ways do these objects' powers differ?
-intro
-sows head
-conch
-symbolism
-conclusion

People naturally need something to look up to in life, i.e. a god figure. The way I see it, the savages look up to the beast as the "ruler" of the island, they even went so far as to provide it with offerings, the  sow's head. The sow's head was offered to the beast just when all logic started to erode and the boys started to rely on instinct. Simon, the representation of pure human goodness, begins to get deranged  with the savagery and stress beginning to form and starts to "speak" with the rotting sow's head. The head tells him they are going to have "fun" together, this fun foreshadows his death in the next chapter. After speaking with the sow's head simon realizes that the fear of the beast actually is actually the fear of the beast within them all. When simon tries to tell the others they kill him for speaking with the beast. This is just one example of how certain things are able to wield power over the boys, here are some others.

The sow's head, the representation of an evil Satan figure who evokes savagery. The sow's head is the one who showed simon the truth, and thus got him killed. It was originally offered to the beast as an offering, which in turn solidified the belief of the beast to all of the boy who would eventually become savage. The sow's head is also responsible for transformation of the beast into a god figure. When the boys first started becoming savage on their first hunt, the sow's head symbolized a turning point from facts to instinct; civilization to savagery. There is of course other object capable of wielding power over the boys, such as piggies glasses, the beast, and the conch.

The conch, the representation of order, hope, and leadership conducted by ralph. When the boys first crash on the island the conch is discovered by piggy and ralph, After that it effectively used to keep order and govern the boys. Ralph's election to leadership is partially because of the conch as he is the one who originally called the group together with it. The conch is later used as a way to allow organized negotiation amongst the boys, again symbolizing order. Later on, as the boys unification starts to erode, so does the conch's powers of keeping order. Towards the end of the book, the conch is destroyed when piggy gets crushed by a boulder, this signifies the total loss of order and hope of civility amongst them.

Symbolism, the representation of something deeper and more abstract within something else. Among the sow's head and the conch, symbolism is represented many time in Lord Of The Flies, some say the whole book is a biblical parallel. Piggies glasses represent science and intellect within the group, this is shown when they use the glasses to focus the sunlight to make a fire, later on the glasses are stolen effectively leaving them helpless. The signal fire represents the hope of rescue amongst the boys, early on the fire is kept lit to attract planes and boats, later on the fire is only used to cook food by the savages, this shows that don't care about rescue anymore. The beast that scares the boys early on represents savagery that is within them all, later on Jack's group worships the beast as a totemic god. Unfortunately only simon comes to the realization that the beast is within then all, and he is later killed for talking to it on the mountain. Simon and Roger symbolize both pure human goodness and bloodlust at its extremes (simon wants to protect the littluns while roger wants to use them as objects of amusement). These are just a few of the many symbols represented within Lord Of The Flies.

At first when I read lord of the flies I thought it was a simple book about some boys who crashed on an island, as I read more and more the deeper it started to become and the symbolism started to become more and more apparent. The sow's head, the conch, the beast, all of these thing put together are all part of what make this book interesting. At the end, it all comes down to how William Golding represented the effect of what would happen if boys were all alone with no contact with adults.

Anna and her father surveyed the odd circle oaf rock they had found sitting in the sand not too long ago. a while later they returned back to their house, the Lodge as it was called. Anna instructed her father to rest as the color had left his face early in the day. In days to come her father rested while she went to the closest city which was about 100 miles away. By the time she had returned, 7 days later, she found him surveying the rocks again. He led her to the volcanic cave he found a few days earlier.

The Necklace reader response, january 10, 2012

Madame Losiel was beautiful woman who lived in poverty. Everything she ever dream for was the life and benefits of the upper class. Her husband trued to do as much for her as he could to treat her. One night her husband got her an invitation for a ball held by his business. All of the wealthy people in the area would be there. She did not accept the invitation as she had nothing to wear to it. Her husband gave her the money to buy a dress and suggested she go over to their friends house and borrow some jewelry. She bought a dress, borrowed a diamond necklace and waited until the party came.

The night of the party she was very happy, as al the men wanted to dance with her and introduce themselves. At four in the morning they finally left the ball. When they got home she discovered she no longer possessed the necklace and screamed. Her husband did all he could to find it but to no prevail. They went down to the jewelers the next day and found a necklace exactly like the borrowed one, but there was only one problem, to was thirty thousand francs. A week or so later they finally saved and loaned enough money to buy the new one and return it to her friend.

It took ten years from that day to pay off all the people and businesses they had loaned from. When she was finally done working she went for a walk. On her walk she met her old friend from which she borrowed the necklace and told her the whole story. Her neighbor gasped in shock and said "My necklace was but a replica, and cost less than five hundred francs" THE END.
